Alliance for Girls (AFG) is the largest alliance of girls’ organizations and champions in the country. AFG is where girl-serving professionals go for trainings, workshops, resources, referrals, and collaborations.

Professional Development

Since its founding, AFG has conducted 38 peer-based trainings and four conferences attended by more than 1,000 leaders. Through facilitating knowledge sharing, relationship building, and training between agencies, AFG is successfully supporting and igniting leadership in the girls service sector. In fact, 92% of members report that they are better able to meet their organization's missions.

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi & Holy Names High School

As an ally of AFG, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi’s office used Alliance for Girls' listserv to announce the Congresswoman's event celebrating Women’s Equality Day at the Women’s Building on August 26, 2014. Through that, 8 senior students of AFG member Holy Names High School, an all-girls school, were able to attend the event and meet Nancy Pelosi herself, leaving an indelible impression on them.

 "[Congresswoman Pelosi] reminded them, 'You guys are future voters and future leaders. These are issues that will impact you and your community,'" said Kendra Carr, Holy Names' Assistant Principal of Student Development. "The girls were so moved; the women [who spoke] looked like them. On the ride back, the conversation was about equal pay for equal work. Another conversation they had was about how legislation is used to push political agendas."

Julia Morgan School for Girls & Equal Rights Advocates

AFG member Equal Rights Advocates (ERA) made a short movie about the Equal Pay Act based on a research project conducted by fellow AFG member Julia Morgan School for Girls, and starring Julia Morgan's students. This short video was screened at ERA's annual luncheon, to a room of 700 people. The girls also presented the film at the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (EEOC) annual conference, with hundreds of business representatives present. Not only did this bolster the girls' self-esteem and public speaking skills, one of the girls was so inspired by the experience and realization of her efficacy that she applied to be on the Hayward Youth Commission--and was admitted!


Alliance for Girls and its members are heightening the importance of gender-specific programming in policy and integrating the voices and needs of girls and the girls service sector more fully into government procedures and policies.

Gender-Responsive & Culturally Competent Services

When the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families (DCYF) was preparing its most recent community needs assessment, it held town hall meetings to gather community feedback. Recognizing that girls’ and women’s voices were drowned out and unheard, AFG and its member agencies worked with DCYF in their process to include protocols that would reflect the voices of girls and girls’ services. Specifically, DCYF and AFG partnered to hold focus groups with leaders of girls’ services and with girls who were program participants of AFG’s member organizations.

Through this process, AFG restored funding for girl-serving organizations and successfully advocated for “gender-responsive and culturally competent services,” and “services to address the needs of girls and LGBTQQ youth,” to be included in the San Francisco children’s amendment, which sets aside approximately $50 million annually for youth services. Gender and girls had never before been mentioned in the children’s amendment language.

The National Girls Initiative Innovation Awards

In 2015, AFG was one of three in the nation to be awarded the inaugural National Girls Initiative Innovation Awards from the US Department of Justice. This award is funding an initiative led by AFG and its members to partner with Oakland Unified School District to craft and implement new policies that will ensure that the school system is appropriately and effectively meeting girls’ unique needs.
